The Taskopen Indigo Block-Print Ao Dai Artisan is a garment that celebrates the intersection of Vietnamese ao dai tradition and the regional artisan textile heritage of northern Vietnam — where hand-block-printing on indigo-dyed cotton has been practiced by H’mong and other ethnic minority communities for centuries. Taskopen sources its Indigo Block-Print fabric from a cooperative of artisan weavers and dyers working in the traditional method: cotton cloth is woven by hand on traditional looms, resist patterns are applied using hand-carved wooden blocks with a beeswax resist paste, and the cloth is immersed in fermented indigo dye vats multiple times to build the depth and variation of tone that distinguishes natural indigo dyeing from synthetic indigo printing. The resulting fabric has the slightly irregular, organically varied character of hand-produced textiles — no two Indigo Block-Print Ao Dai garments have identical pattern placement or identical indigo depth, making each piece genuinely unique. Taskopen constructs the Artisan Ao Dai from this fabric in the traditional ao dai tunic and trouser form, maintaining the silhouette and proportions of the traditional garment while the hand-produced fabric gives it a craft character and cultural specificity distinct from the silk and polyester fabrics of the mainstream collection. The medium mandarin collar is 30mm high and finished with a hand-stitched binding in a contrasting natural-dye accent thread.
